Nuestra News: Fall 2009

Nuestra Awarded $8.5 Million In Recovery Funds

Nuestra is pleased to announce that construction will commence this fall on the Kasanof Bakery development, located on the corner of Blue Hill Avenue and Edgewood Street in Roxbury, after remaining vacant for more than a year following environmental remediation. As the Low Income Housing Tax Credit market collapsed in 2008, construction funding could not be fully acquired. At the same time, the foreclosure crisis and the resulting economic fallout began to severely impact the neighborhoods surrounding the Kasanof Bakery site. This 48 unit low income housing development will now bring 122 construction jobs to the one of the epicenters of the economic crisis here in Boston as well as housing for individuals and families earning less than 60% area median income. Monica Dean joins Nuestra

Nuestra Comunidad is pleased to announce that Monica Dean has joined our company as the Director of Organizing & Resident Services. Monica brings to this position a wealth of experience with community development and organizing in Roxbury, Nuestra’s core service area. Monica knows Roxbury very well both as a long-time resident and through her professional history. She served as Chief of Staff for Senator Dianne Wilkerson in the Massachusetts Senate, and while there assisted hundreds of residents in accessing crucial resources and opportunities, helping many find affordable housing and others avoid foreclosure. In that role Monica worked closely with the community development corporations, other community-based organizations, churches and neighborhood associations across the Second Suffolk District. 2008 Annual Report Released Online

At Nuestra, 2008 will be remembered as the year we were called upon to help stabilize our traditional service area in a new and progressive manner, as the neighborhoods to which we have worked to bring positive change for nearly three decades suffered abandonment, deterioration, and blight in the wake of the foreclosure crisis. The great need displayed by our community called for a new approach that would both rebuild the ailing neighborhoods in Roxbury and North Dorchester and continue our long-term mission of community-building. Summer Remembered: NeighborWorks Week Cleanest Street Contest

On Saturday, June 13th, well over 300 volunteers representing 26 streets in the Roxbury and North Dorchester communities came together to clean their streets, remove garbage and spend the afternoon at a community picnic where drumming and face painting were only trumped in popularity by the barbeque chicken. Though we couldn’t fit everyone into the photo, this was the largest Cleanest Streets Contest that any staff member could remember. We were also thrilled to have some of the best weather by far for the month of June with blue skies and temperatures in the mid-70’s. It was day filled with great activities that no one is likely to forget anytime soon.

A very special thanks goes out to all of our sponsors, including Alexander, Aronson and Finning & Co., P.C.K, and Boston Private Bank and Trust. CLICK HERE to read more.
