Nuestra Culinary Ventures To Close
After close to eight years of operation, Nuestra will close its culinary incubator, Nuestra Culinary Ventures, on June 30th. With the current economic crisis creating additional challenges, Nuestra cannot afford to incur the incubator’s ongoing annual operating losses. With the current economic crisis creating additional challenges for all nonprofits, Nuestra’s priority must be stabilizing our service area of Roxbury and North Dorchester. The importance of responding effectively to the crisis of foreclosed, abandoned and blighted properties was a key factor in the decision to transition out of the food service business. In particular, this decision will allow Nuestra to strengthen its operations within the Dacia Foreclosure Intervention Target area, a section of the Roxbury and North Dorchester communities identified by the City as dealing with a high rate of foreclosure.

“Currently, Nuestra’s neighborhoods are struggling with some of the highest rates of foreclosure in the city. We are doing everything we can right now to acquire foreclosed properties, prevent foreclosure, prevent acquisitions by speculators, which often leave homes vacant, and lead community safety initiatives. We have to concentrate our resources to ensure that as many families as possible stay in the community,” remarked David Price, Nuestra’s Executive Director.  CLICK HERE for complete article.

United We Stand, Divided We Fall
By Magdalene Brea

The mission of Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation is to build the wealth and enhance the physical, economic and social well-being of Roxbury and other underserved populations in greater Boston through a community driven process that promotes self-sufficiency and neighborhood revitalization.

On March 19, 2009, the first of many Resident Circle neighborhood meetings was held in Nuestra’s Ann & George Macomber Learning Center at Stafford Heights. The purpose of this meeting was for residents living near the Blue Hill Avenue and Dudley Street intersections of Roxbury to meet one another. Attendees were encouraged to share their personal stories and express their concern for issues in their communities. For some, this was the first time formally meeting their neighbors.

Acknowledging 15 Years of Service and Leadership

Marcia Thornhill has spent the better part of the last two decades making her mark on Boston’s housing landscape. Coming from City Hall, where she worked in the Capital Planning Office of the Public Facilities department, Marcia joined Nuestra 15 years ago as a Project Manager. Her efforts on projects such as Palladio Hall, Infill Apartments and the Dartmouth Hotel are a major factor in the success Nuestra has achieved these last 15 years. In 2002, the successful project manager was asked to take over as Director of Nuestra’s growing Real Estate Development Department. In this position, Marcia has overseen acquisition, rehabilitation and construction of several hundred units of affordable housing and commercial space, cultivating respect for Nuestra exponentially along the way. She continues to lead the Real Estate Development Department with extensive knowledge and poise.  CLICK HERE for complete article.
