In 1981, residents of the Dudley Square neighborhood in Roxbury created Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation to take control of the land, build new housing, and combine their energies to create a better future. Today, Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation is one of Boston’s oldest and most successful community development corporations. Our mission statement guides our work:
Nuestra Comunidad is devoted to building the wealth and enhancing the physical, economic, and social well-being of Roxbury and other underserved populations in greater Boston through a community-driven process that promotes self-sufficiency and neighborhood revitalization.
To accomplish this mission, we work within three main areas of focus:
- Community Organizing and Resident Services - mobilizing community members to take shared action in addressing neighborhood concerns; providing programming, advocacy, and referral services to residents of Nuestra-owned housing developments and surrounding neighborhoods.
- Community Revitalization and Stabilization - acquiring and developing existing properties and vacant land to provide affordable housing and preserve the physical character of neighborhoods.
- Community Wealth Generation - providing a comprehensive spectrum of services designed to help aspiring and current homeowners and promote neighborhood stability through our NeighborWorks Homeownership Center.
Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation, with a 2012 annual operating budget of over twelve million dollars, is managed by 23 employees and a 11-member volunteer Board of Directors that represents the diverse communities we serve.
